Difference between purple shampoo and blue shampoo?

I don’t know why, but I only just recently discovered blue shampoo, and I thought it was only purple shampoo that existed. What exactly is the difference between blue and purple shampoo? I know they’re both used for blonde hair.

I didn’t know about this for the longest time, because people often recommend PURPLE shampoo to all blondes, but the truth is that purple shampoo is only for natural blondes, while blue shampoo is for brunettes that have gone blonde.

This is because the pigments in blue shampoo help to tone orange hair (which happens when brunette hair gets dyed blonde) and also removed brassiness.

Quick way to remember:

purple shampoo: natural blondes to correct yellowness
blue shampoo: dyed brunette blondes to correct orange tones

Holy moly, good to know…I had absolutely NO idea about blue shampoo!!

Blue is opposite of orange on the color wheel so what that means is it neutralizes orange. So if you have a very orange/brassy tone to your hair, use blue, typically on brunettes.

Yellow is opposite of purple on the color wheel, so to neutralize yellow we use purple. So purple shampoo is used to tone out yellow in the hair, typically light blondes.
